CHANANUN CHOTRUNGROJ  is a highly regarded director of photography based in Los Angeles, known for her exceptional ability to craft emotionally resonant and visually captivating cinematography across a diverse range of narrative features, documentaries, and television productions. Her work spans international and independent cinema, as well as critically acclaimed streaming content, establishing her as one of the most dynamic voices in contemporary cinematography.

Chotrungroj’s recent projects include Birth/Rebirth (2023), directed by Laura Moss, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was distributed theatrically by IFC. The film garnered three Independent Spirit Award nominations, including Best Screenplay, Best Lead Performance (Judy Reyes), and Someone to Watch. Chotrungroj also lensed Three Mouths (2022), directed by Jared Frieder and starring Troye Sivan, a New York Times Critic’s Pick that streams exclusively on Paramount Plus. Additionally, Chotrungroj contributed her distinctive visual style to Palm Trees and Power Lines (2022), directed by Jamie Dack, which won the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2022.

In the documentary realm, Chotrungroj served as the cinematographer for The Trapped 13: How We Survived the Thai Cave (2022), directed by Pailin Wedel and produced by Netflix. The film, which tells the harrowing story of the 2018 Thai cave rescue, was nominated for Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary at the 44th News & Documentary Emmy Awards in 2023.

Chananun Chotrungroj recently served as the Director of Photography for the upcoming Netflix series Dalah: Death and the Flowers (2025) (Original title: Dala Bupha Khattakam), where her expert cinematography deepens the emotional complexity of the narrative, exploring toxic and patronizing cultural dynamics.

A graduate of New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, Chotrungroj earned her MFA in Film, where she was awarded both the Ang Lee Fellowship and a Department Fellowship. She is a two-time recipient of the Nestor Almendros Award for Outstanding Cinematography by a Woman (2013 and 2015), and her work has received widespread recognition, including a 2020 Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Cinematography for The Third Wife (2018), directed by Ash Mayfair. Chotrungroj also won the Best Cinematography Award at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival for Materna 2020.
